Stop Building Custom CRMs. Here's What to Use Instead.
We get this request more than any other and we almost always say no. A custom CRM is the easiest project to start and one of the worst to finish.
Why custom CRMs become regret-engines
You build the v1 in a weekend. Then someone wants a pipeline view. Then someone wants email sync. Then someone wants reminders. Then someone wants reports. Two years later you're maintaining a half-built Salesforce competitor and your real product hasn't shipped a feature.
What to use instead
For most teams under 50 people, Attio or Folk will do everything you want, look better than anything you would build, and have someone else's engineering team fixing the bugs.
For more structured pipelines with heavy automation, HubSpot Starter is genuinely good now. The free tier is enough for most agencies to run their entire sales motion.
For very simple needs, an Airtable base with a Softr or Glide front end gets you 80% of the way there in an afternoon.
When custom is actually right
If your CRM logic is core to your business — you're a brokerage, a recruiting firm, a clinic — and the off-the-shelf tools genuinely don't model your world, then yes. But ask first whether you're avoiding a tool because it's wrong, or because it's expensive. Those are different problems with different answers.
